March is Reading Month
We Argh Readers!
Dear Parents,
I wanted to send you a note about March is Reading Month. This year our theme is “We Argh Readers”! We enjoyed a fun assembly to kick things off on Tuesday, and already had a chance to draw some great pirate ships.
Students can earn many prizes this month for showing great reading behaviors like staying on task, choosing good fit books, reading voraciously, and making their weekly reading A.R. goal.
A.R. stands for Accelerated Reading, a program that allows students to take a short quiz on a book they have read. The quiz keeps students accountable for understanding the books they are reading as well as knowing the words.
Each student has a goal to accumulate 1.5 A.R. points each week. This is 3-4 picture books (1/2 point each), or a few short chapter books (Junie B. Jones books are usually 1 point each). Students earn their full points for answering questions correctly. They earn a portion of the points if a question or two incorrect.
Student can earn a prize each week for meeting their A.R. goal. They can earn a pirate telescope, eye patch, pirate bracelet, and a pirate spirit stick for their backpack!
I have volunteers coming in to listen to my students read almost every day. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know.
Students can also earn the ability to go to a Pirate Party, and be entered into drawings for bikes, time in the money machine, and chance to dunk a pirate (a.k.a teacher!).
Students will also earn coins and gems as well, for showing off their great reading skills this month!
