We had a wonderful time last week learning more about apples! Friday we finished the week off by making applesauce in the crockpot. Students measured and stirred, and then tried the sweet applesauce over icecream. They also sampled yellow, red, and green apples and came up with a list of adjectives to describe them.
This week we will focus on short /i/ words for spelling. If the spelling seems too easy for your child, consider having them extend the word list to include blends at the beginning (example: pig to twig or twigs). They can practice many words using a word family as a base. It is very exciting for first graders to realize that spelling one word correctly can lead to the easy spelling of many, many related words!
Our next spelling words are:
did* is* it*
him* his* sit*
into* hip bit
if * big* pig
Math:
We are practicing visualizing and automatically recognizing one more. Students are using 10 frames and Rekenreks (hands on tools) to model numbers daily. Expect homework for math on Thursday night this week. This will be due by Monday.
Reminder:
We have a field trip to Safetyville on October 25th. I have heard from 3 or 4 parents only. Please let me know if you are interested in attending. We will leave the school by 8:30, and return by 10:45.
