Coats
Wow! The temperature has really changed quickly. From this point forward I will not take as many recesses each day, but will still on many occasions take students outside to play in the morning or afternoon. It is pretty chilly out there. Please send students with a sweatshirt or coat. Please let me know if you would like help geting these items.
Field Trip
A field trip persmission slip will be sent home on Thursday. Please return by Monday, October 21st. This form is for our Friday, October 25th trip to Safetyville in Jackson. If you would like to chaperone, please fill out the bottom of the form. We can accomodate 6 to 8 chaperones.
Spelling
This week's spelling words focus on the short /o/ sound. Students are also learning about blends such as /cr/ /fl/ /br/ /cl/. They can identify these letter combinations quickly in words to help them become better readers and spellers. This weeks words are:
not* flop stop
on* job shop
pot sob spot
mop hot dot
Writing
We are mystery writer's this week. Students use a graphic organizer to record information about fall activities and Halloween. Then, they use that information to write sentences that help students identify the writer. They are illustrating themselves with a mask, and we will see if we can guess the writers next week! This will be the first time that students will "publish" their writing. They will conference with me on spelling and sentence structure, then use their best handwriting to recopy their writing.
Math
We are learning the ways to make numbers. This includes all the possible combination for addition, as well as tally marks, dominoes, 10 frames, and drawing objects. This is a new way of looking at numbers for students. They will need to do some memorization of facts, but they will have had a lot more experience with numbers before that point. We have worked many days on ways to make 6, and are now moving on to ways to make seven.
Science
We have been learning about the weather. First, we predicted where it would be warmest and coolest in our room. Then placed thermometers around the room and read the temperature. We discovered that the sun and the computer plugs gave off heat, and that our shady areas were much cooler.
Reading
Words:
We are reading many words with blends and new word families. This week we practiced words like: grass, crib, brick, and track. Students were challeged to add "ing" or "s" to the end of words as well.
Story Structure:
We have been reading all about pets this week. We have been thinking about the setting in books and what the characters do there. We read: "Along Came Toto" and "Pet Tricks".
Halloween Celebration
We will celebrate Halloween this year on October 31st, at 12:45 p.m. Students will have an opportunity to change into their costumes after lunch and can then enjoy treats and a small celebration. Next week I will contact parents that volunteered to bring items for the party. We will have fall activities in the morning as well, but will have our celebration at the end of the day.
Pajama Day!
We will have a Read In the day after Halloween. Students may wear appropriate pajamas and may bring slippers. They should not bring: pillows, blankets, etc. We will be reading books and creating art projects for November.
Please contact me if you have questions or concerns. Have wonderful week.
