Math- Unit Review and Test
Students have been working hard at school to learn their addition and subtraction facts through 10. Please continue to work on these at home as well. These facts support all we do in first grade.
We have also been learning about balanced equations! There will be some extra practice on this skill this week, too. We began working on these types of problems last week, but students still need more practice. We used balances and gram weight Teddy bears to see if our equations were true or false.
It is very important to know the math facts in order to solve these types of problems.
Examples:
6=6
5 + 4 = 8 +1
10 - 6 = 2 + 2

Valentine's Day Celebration
We will celebrate Valentine's Day in the Afternoon on February 12th. We will be having Pizza and a drink, and then passing out and reading Valentines. The celebration will be after special, at the end of the day. We will start around 1:50.
Valentine Boxes: This year, I would like students to bring in an already decorated box from home. They should bring it on party day. The box can be made from a cereal box, tissue box, or a bag/ box you have around. Feel free to decorate it with them as creatively or simplistically as you like! Many kids will be thrilled with a box covered in paper that they could color, or put stickers all over! Also, please be sure they have their name written in large letters. This will help when kids are passing out Valentines.
Also, I would like students to bring in a dollar towards pizza, if possible. If you are able to donate drink boxes, please let me know.

Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Students have been studying Polar Animals for the past few weeks. This will be our final week of study. They will be writing an informational report on one of the animals we have learned about.
They have also been learning about text features such as: captions, titles, bold print words, graphs and charts, and diagrams with labels.
We spent two weeks on the word chunks /or/ and /ar/, as these were challenging for many. This week will be moving on to words with /er/.
Please remember to return baggie books if you have some at home. I have volunteers a few times a week that send them out for me.
