We have 24 students in our room. Please send a Valentine for each student. Valentines may be purchased or handmade, as long as there is one for everyone. If you need help with this, please let me know.
This is our class list:
We have been very busy over the last few weeks establishing routines again after so many days off with cold weather and so much snow! It is good to be back in the swing of things, and I am looking forward to full weeks of school! I hope the kids are too!
Math: We have been working on writing, reading, and creating higher numbers. In first grade we learn numbers to 120. It would be helpful to practice writing the challenging numbers at home. Those numbers are typically 101-120. We are also using Base 10 Blocks to build and then diagram numbers. For example: 64 is made up of 6 tens and 4 ones. We will continue working on this skill through the month of February.
At home practice: Math Fact Fluency for adding and subtracting through sums of 10. Practice, Practice, Practice!
Reading: We are focusing on the important events and sequence of events in fiction and information reading. Great questions to ask your child after reading together are: Who were the characters? What was the setting? Can you retell this story to me and share the important details? What was the main idea in this story?
Writing: We are focusing on informational writing pieces. Students have written about Groundhog Day, penguins, How to make or do something, and many other topics. All students can write informational pieces just by using the knowledge they already have. A great way to help support this type of writing is to play Fact or Opinion at home. Just give your child some statements and see if they can decide if it is a fact, or just something someone might think.
Geometry: We are working weekly on geometry. This gives students an opportunity to explore ideas about shapes and fractions throughout the year. We are currently learning about attributes. Attributes are the qualities that make a shape, a shape! For example: 3 sides, straight lines, closed figure means you have a triangle.
Spelling: A new list came home on Tuesday. We will have our test on Monday. The words were /ew/ /aw/ and /ind/ spelling patterns.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Have a great weekend!
